Sterimixer® The Original Magnetic Coupled Mixer for Pharmaceuticals

The Sterimixer may be the most widely used magnetically coupled mixer for bio-pharmaceutical applications world-wide.  It consists of the following major components: impeller, bearing, weld-plate, drive unit and control box.  All wetted parts of the impeller and the weld-plate are made of AISI 316 L (EN 1.4404).  Interchangeable impeller designs are available.

Bearings

The bearing assembly consists of male and female bushings. It provides a rotating surface for the impeller. The CIP design of the impeller ensures that the bearing is effectively cleaned during CIP/SIP.

The journal bearing design minimizes rotating elements and contact surfaces, therefore limiting particle generation. This proven design provides a flat rotating surface that combined with the design of the magnetic coupling ensures rotational stability.

The bearings can be provided in different materials, such as tungsten carbide or silicon carbide.  Material selection is based on compatibility with the process fluids.

Flexible Platform

The weld plate is welded onto the tank bottom and is made out of AISI 316L stainless steel. Comparable SMA and SMO models fit into the same weld plate and bearing, making it easy to exchange impeller types. Additionally, in most weld plate sizes, more than one size mixer can be installed, providing a flexible platform.

Magnetic Couple Mixer Impeller Inside CouplingRadial Design for Strong Magnetic Coupling

The magnetic coupling design is radial, which creates a very strong magnetic coupling. This allows Sterimixer to work with products with viscosities up to 1,000 cP.

The design of the magnetic coupling is key to a proper operation of the mixer unit, in particular of the bearing assembly. The Sterimixer coupling does not create any additional forces to the bearing while the impeller rotates.

Drive Units

The drive unit is the driving mechanism of the mixer. It consists of the magnet rotor, gearbox and motor, mounting flange, and shaft.  Most Sterimixers are equipped with white epoxy coated, washdown duty gearbox and motor.  Other configurations such as explosion-proof, stainless steel, and pneumatic are also available. Drive units with an extended shaft are available for jacketed and/or insulated vessels.

Bottom Mounted Magnetic MixerLowering device

The magnet lowering device allows the user to break the magnetic coupling and remove the impeller inside the vessel without having to remove the drive unit from the vessel.  This reduces service time considerably and it is particularly useful when working with heavy drive units. This device is available in most size mixers and existing drive units can be retrofitted to have it installed.

Impeller Monitor Sensor

The Impeller Monitor Sensor directly measures impeller rpm by counting the magnets revolutions.

Control System

Consisting of a variable frequency drive, allow to control the agitator speed. Provided in different enclosures. Std. Unit, as shown, has a IP65 (NEMA 4x) enclosure Options: Speed sensor system for reading rpm of impeller.

Control Box Mark III with touch screen: This option includes a touch screen HMI/controller that allows for easy control of the mixer speed and displays both measured rpm and set rpm. Up/down arrows allow the operator to increase/decrease mixer speed.  All programming is accessed through the HMI.  This option includes a VFD provided in a stainless steel enclosure.
